word of advice, if you wanna learn properly:

+ be very determined
+ have an interest for the language itself not just anime
+ listen to alot of J-music
+ Watch alot of raws and then the fansub, maybe you'll pick things up
+ Find goodo software to learn from, like japanese sites or whatever
+ Dont give up so easily or thing "its to late to learn japanese" it never is
+ You cant be very sure to pick up things in one day, its a long process

Great post, I have downloaded some great software and I notice that im picking out words while watching anime and listening to music it does make me feel better when this happens mainly I know what im learning is working and being used

its fun to try and memorize the kana (hiragana, katakana etc) whilst learning what they actually are too.

Subtitle for anime and translated lyrics can help out alot, but sometimes you can guess what they are saying......as long as you get the hang on the story, watch anime without subtitle is very easy ^^

I've been learning Japanese for almost 4 years, and I understand a little of what they are saying. Though there's a problem for me when I hear another Japanese word instead of the one I was expecting. Let's say...The subtitle in a anime says "Yes," but when you're expecting "Hai", you hear "Un." So I guess saying "Un" is like saying "Yeah" in english. So I am sticking to the "Polite" phrases for now.
